Discover The Artist

Artistic Approach

Passionate about creation and mindful of the noble relationship between the artwork and the material, as a sculptor and artist I seek elements that confront humanity with its environment, encouraging the audience to reflect.

Preferred Materials

For my works and scukotures, I enjoy playing with various mediums, such as bronze, marble, stone, and wood, to create a perfect balance between the artwork’s history and its material. Additionally, to refine my art and understanding of the works, I have always created studies in clay and plasticine in my workshop.

Style and Perspective

Over the years, I have developed a unique sculpture style. I craft stories by merging characters with elements of nature. I take care to provide an intriguing perspective on every facet of the sculpture. Consequently, all angles must be observed to fully comprehend the work.

My Story

I was born in the small village of Causapscal in 1955. My childhood was a very happy one with my parents, three brothers, and three sisters. At school, I was particularly fond of visual arts, an interest that continued to grow.

In my early years, my father, Conrad Chouinard, worked with wood. He used to carve magnificent walking canes with his pocketknife, as well as wooden chains with balls inside. He was very skilled, and it was quite impressive! This talent he had developed on his own to pass the time was the beginning of my strong interest in sculpture.

As a result, around the age of 12, I also started trying to do the same with my own pocketknife. My early sculptures were already greatly appreciated by the family. My mother, Thérèse Thibault, created my first sculpture collection.

Subsequently, at the age of 15, I went to work in St-Jean-Port-Joli in the workshop of a sculptor named Denys Hépell, a highly talented man. It was in that workshop where I learned to handle my first sculpting knives. It’s also where I sold my first artworks in the art market.

A few years later, it was now residing in Sherbrooke where I improved my skills by meeting several painters, sculptors, and potters. Meeting Charles Auguste Brisson, a highly skilled artist sculptor, allowed me to further refine my own technique through exchanges and wonderful encounters. This also marked the beginning of a long-lasting friendship.

Over the years, I have developed a unique sculpture style. I create stories by blending characters with elements of nature. I take care to provide an intriguing perspective on every facet of the sculpture. As a result, all angles must be observed to comprehend the artwork as a whole.

I also enjoy playing with various mediums, including wood, stone, and bronze, to create a perfect balance between the artwork’s narrative and its material. To refine my art and understanding of the pieces, I have always conducted studies in clay and plasticine in my workshop.

Passionate about creation and attentive to the noble relationship between the artwork and the material, I seek elements that confront humans with their environment to encourage the public to reflect.

My Artistic Approach

Beginnings in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli

Building on my early experiences with sculpting knives in the workshop of St-Jean-Port-Joli, under the guidance of sculptor Denys Hépell, I sold my first artworks in the art market.

Sherbrooke and Skill Enhancement

In Sherbrooke, I honed my skills with renowned artists, including Charles Auguste Brisson. From there, a lasting friendship was born, along with my unique sculpture style, blending characters and natural elements to create captivating stories. I enjoy experimenting with wood, stone, and bronze to breathe life into my works, always seeking the perfect balance between narrative and material.

My Passion, My Vision

To refine my art, I also create studies in clay and plasticine in my workshop. My passion for creation and artistic vision lead me to explore the connections between man and his environment, inviting the public to reflect.
